BIS Settles $1 Million in Just 80 Seconds: Project Agorá Hits Major Tokenization Milestone

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...
  • BIS completed a $1 million real-value tokenized payment trial involving 28 institutions.
  • Transactions across six major currencies settled in an average of 80 seconds.
  • Project Agorá continues to advance tokenized wholesale payment infrastructure globally.

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has reached another milestone in its effort to modernize international payments. Through Project Agorá, the organization successfully completed real-value testing of tokenized wholesale cross-border payments, settling 800,000 Swiss francs (around $1 million) across multiple financial institutions and central banks.

The latest trial highlights growing interest in tokenized financial infrastructure as central banks and major commercial lenders explore faster, more efficient ways to move money across borders. While the project remains in the testing phase, the results suggest tokenization could play a larger role in the future of global settlement systems.

Project Agorá Tests Tokenized Payments Across Six Major Currencies

According to the BIS, the trial processed payments using tokenized central bank reserves alongside tokenized commercial bank deposits. Transactions were completed in Swiss francs, euros, British pounds, Japanese yen, South Korean won, and U.S. dollars.

In total, the project executed 17 different payment scenarios involving 28 participating financial institutions and central banks. The average settlement time was approximately 80 seconds, demonstrating the potential for significantly faster cross-border transactions compared with many traditional wholesale payment systems.

The successful completion of real-value testing represents an important step beyond simulations, showing that tokenized settlement can function with actual funds.

Global Banks and Central Banks Join the Initiative

Several leading central banks participated in the trial, including those from the United Kingdom, France, Japan, South Korea, and Switzerland.

Major international banks also took part, among them JPMorgan Chase, Citi, Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas, UBS, Standard Chartered, and MUFG. Their involvement reflects growing industry interest in blockchain-based financial infrastructure and tokenized settlement models.

The broad participation gives Project Agorá additional credibility, as both public and private sector institutions continue evaluating how digital assets can improve existing financial networks.

Tokenization Remains a Key Focus for Cross-Border Payments

Project Agorá was launched in 2024 to examine whether tokenized commercial bank deposits and central bank reserves can make wholesale cross-border payments more efficient, secure, and interoperable.

Earlier this year, the project demonstrated atomic settlement across multiple currencies and jurisdictions. The latest real-value testing builds on those findings by proving that tokenized transactions can be executed under live conditions with participating institutions.

The BIS described the July trials as another significant milestone, noting that further testing and development will continue as the project advances.

Project Agorá continues to strengthen the case for tokenized cross-border payments. By successfully settling $1 million across six currencies in roughly 80 seconds, the BIS and its partners have demonstrated meaningful progress toward modernizing wholesale payment infrastructure. While widespread adoption remains some distance away, the latest results show that collaboration between central banks and commercial banks is accelerating the development of faster and more efficient global payment systems.
