A legal battle between commodities giant Glencore and Singapore-based iron ore trader Radiant World has laid bare a problem the crypto industry has spent years trying to solve: nobody can fully trust the paperwork behind global trade.

Radiant World and its affiliate Sapphire Minmetals filed a lawsuit in Singapore’s High Court seeking more than $2 billion in damages, accusing Glencore of deliberately keeping their real trading arrangement out of its audited books. According to the filing, Glencore pushed communications onto WhatsApp messages and in-person meetings rather than paper trails — a pattern Radiant says was designed to dodge scrutiny from US regulators after Glencore’s 2022 guilty pleas on bribery and market manipulation.

Glencore isn’t taking the accusation lying down. The company says it has evidence that Radiant and related firms circulated falsified invoices, contracts, and emails — some fraudulently attributed to Glencore staff — to multiple banks. Glencore has already cut ties with Radiant, taken a $480 million provision on its exposure, and suspended a senior executive pending an internal review.

A Web of Fraud Allegations Across the Trade Finance Industry

The Glencore dispute isn’t isolated. Radiant World is also facing separate lawsuits from trade-finance platform Incomlend and a Mizuho Financial Group unit, both alleging they were shown fake documentation to secure financing. A London court has already frozen roughly $499 million in Radiant-linked assets after Jefferies accused the firm of using invalid iron ore invoices. Whatever the courts eventually decide about who knew what, the underlying pattern is the same: contracts, invoices, and shipping records that exist as disconnected documents are strikingly easy to dispute, alter, or fabricate.

Why This Is a Data Verification Problem, Not Just a Legal One

Every one of these disputes traces back to the same weakness — trade records that can’t independently prove themselves. When ownership, shipment, and payment data live in separate silos controlled by separate parties, there’s no shared, tamper-evident source of truth. That gap is exactly what fraud exploits, and it’s exactly what has pushed distributed ledger technology firms like IOTA to pitch verified, immutable trade data as an answer to an increasingly expensive industry problem.

The Bigger Picture for Commodities Trading

Cases like this tend to accelerate change rather than cause it outright. Banks are already tightening compliance checks on trade financing after a string of scandals involving falsified documents. Whether verified-data infrastructure becomes standard practice or remains a niche pitch will likely depend on how much more these disputes end up costing the industry.
