Anthropic’s IPO Filing Reveals a $42 Billion Loss and a $2 Trillion Dream

Key Takeaways

  • Anthropic’s 2025 revenue hit $4.59 billion, up 1,088% from $386 million, while its GAAP net loss reached $42 billion, mostly from a non-cash accounting charge.
  • Compute and infrastructure costs tripled to $7.33 billion, more than half of all operating expenses, and the company plans $518 billion in future cloud and infrastructure obligations.
  • Nearly a quarter of revenue comes from just two customers with no long-term contracts, and the filing itself warns AI may pose “existential risks to humanity.”

Anthropic just gave the public its clearest look yet at the economics behind Claude. The company’s confidential IPO filing, reviewed by Reuters, shows revenue jumping more than twelvefold in 2025, even as losses and compute spending grew even faster. The numbers explain why investors are excited and why some are nervous at the same time.

Revenue Is Exploding, But So Are the Losses

Anthropic’s 2025 revenue hit $4.59 billion, up from $386 million the year before, a jump of roughly 1,088%. That kind of growth is rare for a company of any size.

The losses grew just as fast. Operating losses widened to $8.06 billion from $2.98 billion, and the GAAP net loss reached $42 billion, up from $8.31 billion. About $34 billion of that net loss comes from a non-cash accounting charge tied to earlier funding rounds, not from money actually spent, but the operating loss alone still shows a business burning cash well ahead of its revenue.

Compute Is the Real Cost Center

Compute and infrastructure spending reached $7.33 billion in 2025, close to triple the prior year’s figure. That single expense made up more than half of all operating costs and was worth about 1.6 times Anthropic’s entire annual revenue. Building frontier AI models, in other words, costs far more than selling access to them currently brings in.

Anthropic still holds $20.28 billion in cash, giving it room to keep spending. But the filing discloses plans for $518 billion in cloud, computing and infrastructure obligations in the years ahead, a figure that dwarfs both its cash position and its current revenue.

Customer Concentration Is a Real Risk

The filing flags a concentration problem: nearly a quarter of 2025 revenue came from just two customers. Many of Anthropic’s largest clients aren’t locked into long-term contracts, meaning they could cut or halt spending at any time. For a company already burning billions, losing a top customer could hit harder than it would for a more diversified business.

The filing also names a less conventional risk: it warns that AI itself may pose “existential risks to humanity,” an unusually direct admission from the company built to develop it.

A Valuation That Assumes Explosive Growth

Reports peg a possible IPO valuation above $2 trillion, more than double the $965 billion price tag from Anthropic’s funding round in May. To justify that jump, revenue would need to grow far beyond its current pace over the next few years. Anthropic also plans to keep founder control through a new “Founder LLC” structure, a move that could raise questions for Class A shareholders down the line.

The IPO itself likely won’t launch until after the November midterms. Until then, the filing leaves the market with a clear picture of a company growing fast, spending faster, and betting that both trends will eventually meet.
