Yuga Labs Transfers CryptoPunks IP to Infinite Node Foundation — What’s Next for the Iconic NFT Collection?

CryptoPunk

The Infinite Node Foundation (NODE) has acquired the intellectual property of the CryptoPunks non-fungible token (NFT) collection from Yuga Labs, according to a May 13 announcement. Alongside the acquisition, NODE also received a $25 million endowment, positioning it as the most well-capitalized nonprofit dedicated solely to digital art in the United States.

Advisory Board to Oversee CryptoPunks Collection

NODE has established an advisory board to manage the CryptoPunks collection, including Matt Hall and John Watkinson — the original creators of the NFT series — as well as a representative from Yuga Labs. “Our role is to build a networked architecture that allows digital art like CryptoPunks to thrive within both digital and art-historical canons,” NODE stated in its announcement. However, the financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

CryptoPunks: The Most Valuable NFT Collection

CryptoPunks, launched in 2017 by Larva Labs, is widely recognized as the most valuable NFT collection, with a market cap of nearly $1.2 billion as of May 13, according to CoinGecko. The collection has amassed over $3 billion in sales, including a record-breaking $24 million sale for a single CryptoPunk NFT in 2022.

Yuga Labs initially acquired the collection in 2022, alongside Meebits, another Larva Labs creation. While Yuga Labs sold Meebits earlier this year, CryptoPunks now falls under NODE’s control, marking a new era for one of the NFT sector’s most iconic collections.
