Vitalik Buterin Backs Bitcoin-Inspired Ethereum Upgrade to Fix a Major Scaling Problem

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has thrown his support behind a proposed redesign of the network’s payment infrastructure, drawing inspiration from a system Bitcoin has used since its early days. The goal is straightforward: reduce the amount of permanent data Ethereum must store while making simple payments cheaper and easier to process.

The proposal comes as Ethereum developers continue looking for ways to improve scalability without weakening decentralization. Buterin’s latest comments suggest that some of the network’s biggest efficiency gains could come from changing how basic transactions are recorded.

Ethereum’s Growing Data Burden

Ethereum currently relies on an account-based model. Every account adds data to the network’s long-term state, and that information generally remains part of the record even when an account is no longer active.

That creates a growing burden for Ethereum nodes, which must maintain and verify the network’s state. Buterin has repeatedly identified data storage as one of Ethereum’s more difficult technical challenges, arguing that improving the underlying architecture could be more important than simply expanding activity through layer-2 networks.

The concern becomes clearer at scale. Billions of accounts could require enormous amounts of storage, potentially making it harder for ordinary users to operate full nodes.

Bitcoin’s UTXO Model Offers a Possible Alternative

Ethereum Foundation researcher Toni Wahrstätter proposed using an approach similar to Bitcoin’s unspent transaction output, or UTXO, model.

Rather than maintaining a permanent balance entry for every account, the system tracks individual units of value. Once a UTXO is spent, the amount of information that needs to remain in the active state can be dramatically reduced.

The difference could become significant as transaction volumes grow. A UTXO-style design could also allow payments to include their own transaction costs, potentially removing the need for recipients to hold ETH simply to receive funds.

Buterin has proposed another complementary change: grouping large numbers of transaction verifications into compact proofs. The idea is to let block producers process substantial batches of activity without forcing every node to repeatedly handle the same computational workload.

Buterin Looks to Hybrid Scaling

Buterin recently praised Bitcoin developers for work on Utreexo, a system designed to let users verify Bitcoin holdings without storing the entire set of unspent coins locally.

His broader vision appears to be a hybrid Ethereum architecture in which compact cryptographic proofs allow much more activity to be processed while preserving the ability for individuals to participate as network operators.

The proposals are still developmental and do not have a confirmed launch schedule. There has also been debate over whether Ethereum is borrowing ideas that other blockchain projects have already implemented.

For Ethereum, however, the central issue is less about where the idea originated and more about whether it can solve a persistent problem: increasing transaction capacity without making the network increasingly difficult for ordinary users to verify.

The discussion arrives as the Ethereum Foundation pursues broader protocol upgrades, including changes aimed at long-term security and efficiency. Yet the market has so far shown limited enthusiasm, with ETH remaining below the $2,000 level cited in the latest market context.

The technical proposals could take considerable time to develop and implement. Still, Buterin’s endorsement highlights a growing focus within Ethereum on reducing state growth and making verification more efficient.
