Saudi Arabia Drops BRICS, Inks Massive $600 Billion Agreement With US

BRICS

Saudi Arabia has taken a decisive step in its international relations by signing a new strategic economic partnership with the United States, effectively pivoting away from its recent association with the BRICS economic alliance. The landmark deal was inked during a visit from US President Donald Trump to Riyadh, marking his first major international engagement since returning to the White House.

Trump and MBS Forge Landmark Agreement

President Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman reached a comprehensive memorandum of understanding, spanning sectors such as energy, mining, defense, health, and the arts. The agreement also includes US support for Saudi Arabia in modernizing its armed forces and strengthening the Ministry of Interior’s capabilities.

Notably, this deal comes amid heightened tensions between the US and BRICS, with Trump previously threatening hefty tariffs on the economic bloc due to its de-dollarization efforts.

Saudi Arabia’s Balancing Act Between US and BRICS

Despite the apparent pivot to the US, Abdulaziz Alghashian, Director of Research at the Observe Research Foundation Middle East, suggested that the deal “won’t come at the cost of relations with others.” However, with the US and BRICS increasingly at odds, the question remains whether Saudi Arabia can maintain its diplomatic balancing act without alienating key partners.

Potential Geopolitical Ramifications

The implications of Saudi Arabia’s new alignment could ripple across global markets, especially in the energy and defense sectors. With the US now positioned as a key partner in Saudi Arabia’s economic strategy, Riyadh may face mounting pressure to align its policies with Washington, potentially at the expense of its BRICS ties. As the dust settles, the international community will be watching closely to see how Saudi Arabia navigates its evolving geopolitical landscape.
