Nexo Australia Launches Crypto-Backed Loans: 5 Key Things Borrowers Need to Know

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...
  • Nexo Australia now lets eligible customers borrow AUD or stablecoins against cryptocurrency collateral.
  • Interest rates range from 0.9% to 21.9%, with flexible repayments and no origination fees.
  • Borrowers face margin-call and liquidation risks if the value of their crypto collateral falls.

Nexo Australia has launched crypto-backed credit lines for eligible customers, giving Australian digital-asset holders a way to access Australian dollars or stablecoins without selling their cryptocurrency. The move comes after Nexo Australia became a credit representative under the country’s National Consumer Credit Protection Act, adding a regulated lending dimension to its local operations.

The launch places Nexo among a small group of crypto platforms offering regulated borrowing products in Australia, where oversight of digital-asset lending has been developing rapidly.

Nexo Australia Introduces Crypto-Backed Borrowing

Under the new offering, customers can use eligible cryptocurrencies as collateral and borrow against their holdings. Nexo says funds are generally available within 24 hours, while repayments can be made flexibly.

The credit lines have no fixed repayment term or origination fees. Interest rates range from 0.9% to 21.9%, with the rate depending on factors including the type of credit line and the customer’s loyalty tier.

Customers can select between Smart and Standard credit lines. Peter Stanhope, general manager of Nexo Australia, said the two products differ in areas including interest rates, supported assets and how collateral is handled when a borrower’s loan-to-value ratio increases.

Crypto Lending Comes With Liquidation Risk

While crypto-backed loans can allow investors to access liquidity without immediately triggering a cryptocurrency sale, they also carry significant risks.

Nexo warns that borrowers can face margin calls if the value of their collateral declines. A further drop could lead to liquidation, potentially resulting in the loss of some or all of the assets pledged against the credit line.

That risk makes loan-to-value levels particularly important for borrowers, especially during periods of sharp cryptocurrency volatility.

Australia’s Crypto Credit Market Is Growing

Nexo’s expansion arrives as Australia’s regulatory framework for crypto lending continues to evolve. In May 2026, Block Earner became the first crypto company in Australia to obtain its own Australian Credit License from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

Nexo Australia is also registered with AUSTRAC as a virtual asset service provider and belongs to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority.

The introduction of crypto-backed credit lines gives Australian investors another option for accessing liquidity while retaining exposure to digital assets. However, the convenience comes with borrowing costs and the possibility of collateral liquidation.

For customers considering Nexo Australia’s crypto loans, understanding interest rates, loan-to-value requirements and liquidation conditions will be essential before committing cryptocurrency as collateral. The launch signals growing institutionalization of crypto lending in Australia, but it also highlights the importance of risk management as regulators and platforms expand the market.
