Key Takeaways:

  • Ledger Recovery Key offers an easy, secure offline backup for Ledger Flex and Stax wallets.
  • The solution complements Ledger’s existing recovery options, reinforcing user choice in self-custody.
  • Ledger emphasizes transparency, with Recovery Key code open for community review before launch.

Ledger, the Paris-based hardware wallet leader, has announced the launch of Recovery Key — a physical, tap-and-PIN “spare key” designed to enhance crypto wallet security and usability for Ledger Flex and Ledger Stax users.

As global crypto adoption accelerates, with the market cap rising by nearly $1 trillion over the past year, Ledger aims to provide modern, user-friendly self-custody solutions for its expanding base of over 7.5 million devices sold.

A New Era of Crypto Self-Custody

Recovery Key enables users to create a secure backup key — alongside the traditional 24-word seed phrase — by tapping a physical card on their device and entering a PIN. The solution uses secure NFC channels and Ledger’s proprietary secure element technology, ensuring no intermediary is involved and that keys remain offline.

“Ledger Recovery Key makes self-custody simple and secure,” said Ian Rogers, Ledger’s Chief Experience Officer. “Too many users still rely on exchanges or insecure wallets. We now offer recovery options for every user profile.”

Expanding Ledger’s Recovery Options

Recovery Key builds on Ledger’s suite of backup solutions, including Ledger Recover, launched in 2023. While Recover is a paid service that encrypts and fragments recovery phrases for storage across jurisdictions, Recovery Key offers a fully offline, physical alternative — giving users multiple options to suit their needs.

Both methods are entirely optional and can complement traditional 24-word backups. “Our growing community needs flexible, transparent recovery solutions,” said Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet.

Commitment to Transparency and Security

Recovery Key’s source code is reviewable, with an accompanying whitepaper already published. The device has undergone rigorous internal security testing by Ledger’s Donjon white hat hacker team, as well as external audits.

Ledger plans to release Recovery Key to the public soon, with pricing and availability details forthcoming.
