IOTA’s latest summit in Nairobi highlights how decentralized technology is tackling real-world challenges in trade, identity, and logistics.
On May 30, Nairobi hosted the IOTA East Africa Web3 Innovation Summit, an event focused on using decentralized technologies to address pressing regional challenges. Organized by CIO Africa, the summit attracted developers, policymakers, and tech leaders from across East Africa, particularly Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania. The gathering spotlighted how IOTA’s decentralized ledger technology is helping to modernize logistics, digital identity, and trade infrastructure.
Dominik Schiener, Co-Founder and Chair of the IOTA Foundation, led key sessions alongside experts like Isaac Odhiambo, TLIP Technical Team Lead at IOTA, and Erick Sirali, Digital Trade Director at TradeMark Africa. Together, they emphasized the shift from blockchain pilots to scalable, real-world applications.
Decentralized Identity and Supply Chain Solutions Take Center Stage
A highlight of the summit was the unveiling of IOTA Identity v1.6 Beta, an upgrade to IOTA’s decentralized identity system. Built on MoveVM and aligned with W3C standards, the update introduces secure, streamlined communication across platforms using Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs). Developers had hands-on access to tools supporting digital ID creation, tokenization, and digital twins.
IOTA also demonstrated its Trade and Logistics Information Pipeline (TLIP), showing how real-time data exchange can significantly enhance global supply chain efficiency. The live showcase reinforced the potential of DLT in transforming cross-border logistics.

The TWIN Foundation and Global Partnerships Signal Scalable Growth
Another major announcement was the formation of the TWIN Foundation, a joint initiative involving the World Economic Forum, TradeMark Africa, and the Tony Blair Institute. The foundation will define global standards for data and technology use in trade, enabling blockchain innovations to transition from test cases to broad implementations.
Looking ahead, IOTA is preparing for the Moveathon Malaysia, scheduled for July 19–21. This global developer initiative invites participants to build applications on the MoveVM framework, continuing IOTA’s push for scalable, impactful blockchain solutions.
With Nairobi’s summit setting a precedent, IOTA is cementing its role as a catalyst for blockchain-driven innovation across emerging markets.
