- Users can access APIs, AI tools, or downloads by sending small onchain USDC payments, removing the need for accounts or subscriptions.
- Their partnership and the launch of the x402 Foundation are turning “402 Payment Required” into a real-world Web3 payment standard.
- With built-in wallets and payment logic, AI models can now complete transactions automatically using X402, powering a new era of “agentic commerce.”
The internet’s long-dormant “402 Payment Required” message has finally found a purpose. Thanks to Coinbase’s x402 protocol, developers can now enable pay-per-use access for APIs, AI inferences, and digital downloads — all through onchain payments in USDC. Instead of subscriptions or sign-ups, users send a small crypto payment and instantly unlock a resource.
This lightweight approach removes friction for both users and developers, creating a bridge between Web2 simplicity and Web3 payment rails.
The Second Wave: From Concept to Adoption
While the 402 status code has existed for decades, it lacked a clear implementation until Coinbase formalized x402 in 2025. The company published open-source documentation, code, and a managed gateway to make integration seamless.
Shortly after, Cloudflare partnered with Coinbase to co-launch the x402 Foundation, integrating support into developer tools and SDKs. This collaboration marks the protocol’s transition from an experimental idea to a potential web standard.
The first real-world showcase came through the PING token, a memecoin on Base that used x402 for its pay-to-mint process. Although the token’s hype cooled, the protocol’s underlying utility endured — especially as AI agents began adopting x402 for autonomous, micro-transaction-based access to APIs.
How Developers Can Get Started with X402
Building with x402 is intentionally straightforward:
- Call a paid endpoint and receive a “402 Payment Required” message.
- Send the onchain payment in USDC to the specified address.
- Retry the request, and access is granted — no passwords, API keys, or accounts involved.

Coinbase offers both a managed gateway for rapid testing and a DIY setup via its open-source reference implementation. Developers can even link AI agents to pay automatically when encountering a “402” response, enabling “agentic commerce” without human input.
Why X402 Matters
The real breakthrough isn’t speculative tokens but infrastructure — a way to make the internet natively transactional again. With support from Coinbase and Cloudflare, x402 could redefine how users and AI agents pay for access online, one onchain request at a time.
