Hamster Kombat, the once-popular tap-to-earn game integrated with Telegram, is taking a bold step to deepen its blockchain integration by launching a layer-2 network on The Open Network (TON). This decision follows a community vote that strongly favored creating the “Hamster Blockchain,” a dedicated layer-2 network designed to enhance the utility of its native HMSTR token.
Layer-2 Networks: TON’s Untapped Potential
Layer-2 networks are secondary frameworks built on existing blockchains, aiming to improve transaction speeds and scalability. While Ethereum hosts established solutions like Base and Blast, TON remains in the early stages of exploring such technologies.
Notably, TON lacks operational layer-2 solutions at present, though its ecosystem is aligning with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) protocols. This compatibility could attract Ethereum developers and liquidity, marking a strategic move for TON. However, Hamster Kombat’s initiative raises eyebrows due to the lack of clarity on development logistics, funding, and technological stack.
Hamster Kombat’s Rise and Fall
Launched in March, Hamster Kombat rapidly amassed 300 million users within five months, with 131 million players qualifying for HMSTR tokens. However, the game’s popularity waned significantly after its token airdrop failed to meet financial expectations.
By November, Hamster Kombat’s active monthly users had plummeted by 86%, dropping to approximately 41 million. The HMSTR token has also faced severe market challenges, with its value declining 70% from its all-time high in late September. The token’s market cap, which peaked at $552 million, now hovers at $194.57 million.
Community Discontent and Future Prospects
Community dissatisfaction has further compounded Hamster Kombat’s challenges. Many players criticized the game’s development trajectory and unmet promises, which may have contributed to the sharp decline in user engagement.
In an effort to revitalize interest, the development team is pivoting to the layer-2 initiative. However, with critical details missing—such as development partners and funding sources—the project’s feasibility remains uncertain. Moreover, the proposed network is absent from the game’s official roadmap, last updated in September.

While the shift to a layer-2 network could signal a new chapter for Hamster Kombat, unanswered questions and a declining user base present significant hurdles. Whether this gamble will reignite interest in the game remains to be seen.
