Bitcoin ETFs Lost $681 Million in a Week. That’s Under 1% of Their Assets

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded about $681 million in net outflows during the week of October 5 to 9, according to SoSoValue data. That’s the largest weekly withdrawal since June, and it ended a three-week run of inflows. Spot Ether ETFs lost roughly $542 million over the same days, bringing combined redemptions to about $1.22 billion.

The headline figure looks alarming. The context is more mixed.

Putting the number in proportion

The Bitcoin funds held about $105.8 billion in assets at the end of that week, around 6.4% of Bitcoin’s market capitalization. Against that base, $681 million is roughly 0.6% of assets. The worst single day, October 7, saw an outflow near $485 million, the largest daily figure since late June. By Friday the funds posted a small positive print.

Cumulative net inflows since launch still stand above $57 billion. The outflow also followed a far larger move in the other direction. The funds took in $2.4 billion in the week to September 25, according to The Block, citing SoSoValue. That was their biggest weekly intake since October 2025, and it pushed 2026 net flows back into positive territory after they sat about $5.8 billion in the red in mid-July.

Concentration matters

CoinReporter’s tally shows Fidelity’s FBTC leading the withdrawals with about $380 million, followed by Ark & 21Shares’ ARKB at roughly $207 million. Together, those two funds account for around 86% of the week’s net outflow. A broad-based retreat would normally show up across many issuers, so concentration in two products raises the possibility that a few large holders or platforms drove the move. Flow data can’t confirm who sold.

What analysts are saying

Wintermute noted that outflows alone don’t prove institutions have turned bearish. The desk tied the pressure to elevated Treasury yields and flagged a 30-year yield above 5.64% as a level that would make it more cautious. It also pointed to Bitcoin’s repeated failure to break above $82,500. Bitcoin fell 3.2% over the week while Ether dropped about 7%.

Market data this week showed Bitcoin recovering from around $81,000 to about $83,300, still under resistance near $83,600 to $84,000, with the Fear & Greed Index at 54.

What the data can’t tell us

Flow figures show net creations and redemptions. They don’t reveal whether sellers were advisors trimming positions, funds rebalancing or traders unwinding hedged trades. One week is also a small sample, and the swing from the September inflow surge to October’s outflow shows how quickly direction can flip.

What to watch next

Three things will clarify the picture. First, whether outflows continue into a second week or fade. Second, how flows react to this week’s inflation data, since rate expectations shape yields. Third, whether Bitcoin can hold support near $82,800 and clear resistance on rising volume. If flows turn positive while yields stay high, the ETF channel may be less rate-sensitive than recent weeks suggest.
