  • Coinbase now offers eligible UK users access to nearly 4,000 U.S. stocks.
  • Investors can trade commission-free with fractional shares starting from £1.
  • The expansion strengthens Coinbase’s strategy to combine traditional finance and crypto in one platform.

Coinbase has expanded its services in the UK by introducing access to nearly 4,000 U.S. stocks, marking another step in its strategy to become a broader investment platform rather than a crypto-only exchange.

The rollout, announced on August 6, gives eligible UK users the ability to trade American equities alongside cryptocurrencies and fiat balances within the same Coinbase app. The company is launching the feature in phases and says it is the first crypto-native platform to offer U.S. stock trading to UK customers.

The move reflects a growing trend among digital asset companies seeking to bridge traditional finance and crypto investing under a single platform.

Coinbase Brings U.S. Stocks to UK Customers

Under the new offering, eligible users can trade almost 4,000 U.S. listed stocks during extended 24/5 trading hours. Coinbase is also eliminating trading commissions while allowing customers to purchase fractional shares from as little as £1, making U.S. equities more accessible to smaller investors.

Users can fund stock purchases using either British pounds (GBP) or USDC, enabling seamless movement between digital assets and traditional investments. However, while stock trading is available during extended hours, fractional share trading remains limited to standard U.S. market hours.

Orders will be routed through Coinbase Capital Markets, while trade clearing and settlement will be handled by a third-party provider.

Coinbase also noted that Coinbase One members will receive uncapped rewards on their USDC balances, adding another incentive for subscribers using the platform.

Part of Coinbase’s “Everything Exchange” Strategy

The latest expansion aligns with Coinbase’s long-term vision of creating a platform where users can manage multiple asset classes from a single account.

According to Coinbase, the goal is to remove the separation between traditional investments and digital assets, allowing investors to access stocks, cryptocurrencies, and cash balances within one ecosystem.

Keith Grose, CEO of Coinbase UK, said the platform now offers access to thousands of U.S. equities, including leading artificial intelligence companies, while indicating additional investment features are planned.

The rollout follows Coinbase’s acquisition of a MiFID investment services license from the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority, allowing the company to expand beyond crypto into regulated investment products such as equities and derivatives.

COIN Stock Sees Modest Movement

The UK stock trading launch comes as Coinbase continues efforts to diversify its revenue sources beyond cryptocurrency trading volumes.

Coinbase shares (NASDAQ: COIN) posted modest premarket gains after closing 0.56% lower at $149.89 in the previous session, after reaching an intraday high of $153.99.

The company is also navigating a broader policy discussion in Washington. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong recently urged U.S. lawmakers to support the proposed Clarity Act after concerns were raised by Senator Josh Hawley over the current version of the legislation.

Coinbase’s expansion into U.S. stock trading for UK customers represents another milestone in the convergence of traditional finance and digital assets. By combining equities, crypto, and stablecoin funding within a single platform, the company is positioning itself as a multi-asset investment destination while continuing to broaden its regulated financial services offering.
