In a move that has both excited and frustrated Shiba Inu (SHIB) fans, the project’s lead developer, Shytoshi Kusama, made his first public appearance today at the Infinity Venture Summit (IVS) in Kyoto, Japan. However, Kusama kept his identity hidden behind a mask, leaving the Shiba Inu community buzzing with mixed reactions.
A Promise Kept, a Face Concealed
Kusama, known for his online pseudonym, had previously announced plans to attend the IVS conference for a meet-and-greet with Shiba Inu enthusiasts. He stayed true to his word, appearing at the event’s dedicated Shiba Inu booth. However, much to the surprise (and disappointment) of some, Kusama did so while wearing a mask, effectively concealing his face.
Videos and photos of the masked Kusama quickly circulated within the Shiba Inu online community, generating significant discussion. Social media posts by Japanese community members Kuro and WeCreate3 showcased Kusama’s interaction with attendees and hinted at potential future collaborations.
Community Divided on Kusama’s Mask
The response to Kusama’s masked appearance was divided. While some praised his effort to connect with the community in person, others expressed frustration at his continued anonymity. Calls to remove the mask even emerged from some SHIB enthusiasts at the event.
A History of Anonymity
Kusama’s decision to remain anonymous reflects a broader trend within the Shiba Inu project. The cryptocurrency itself was launched in August 2022 by the pseudonymous Ryoshi, whose true identity remains unknown. After Ryoshi’s unexpected departure in 2022, Kusama and his team assumed control of the project’s development.

Kusama has consistently cited his “shy and quiet” nature as the reason for maintaining his anonymity. However, earlier this week, he hinted at a potential shift, suggesting a need to become “more assertive” in promoting Web3.
Will Kusama Ever Unmask?
Only time will tell if Kusama eventually decides to reveal his identity. The Shiba Inu community’s reaction to his masked appearance suggests a strong desire for transparency from the project’s leadership. Whether Kusama chooses to address this desire or remain anonymous remains to be seen.
