Worldcoin(WLD) the brainchild of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has scored a significant victory in Kenya after a months-long investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was closed. This news comes after Worldcoin faced suspension in Kenya in 2023 due to concerns over data privacy.
The DCI’s official statement, dated June 14, 2024, confirmed the closure of the case following a request from Worldcoin’s lawyers. The public prosecution unit agreed, and no further police action will be taken. The statement highlighted that the DCI conducted a thorough investigation into allegations surrounding Worldcoin’s activities in Kenya, including data collection practices.
While the investigation is closed, the DCI did recommend specific steps for Worldcoin’s future operations in Kenya. These include ensuring proper business registration, data protection licensing, and collaboration with relevant authorities like the Communication Authority of Kenya. Additionally, the DCI advised Worldcoin to carefully vet and secure legal agreements with any third-party vendors involved in their Kenyan operations.
“We’re thankful for the DCI’s fair investigation and the Director of Public Prosecutions’ decision,” said Thomas Scott, chief legal officer at Worldcoin developer Tools for Humanity. Scott expressed optimism about Worldcoin’s return to Kenya, stating their intention to resume World ID registration “across the country soon.”
Launched in July 2023, Worldcoin aims to provide a unique digital identity solution through iris scanning technology. This World ID allows individuals to verify their humanity online. However, the project sparked concerns from regulators worldwide regarding user data privacy.
Just weeks after launch, Kenya became the first to halt Worldcoin(WLD)operations, citing data protection issues. Since then, Worldcoin has faced similar investigations and bans in countries like India, South Korea, Germany, and Brazil. Most recently, Hong Kong ordered Worldcoin to cease operations in May 2024 due to privacy violations.

Despite these challenges, Worldcoin(WLD) has seen notable user growth. As of April 2024, the World App boasts over 10 million registered users, with an average of 2 million daily users and exceeding 5 million monthly active users.
This turn of events in Kenya signifies a potential comeback for Worldcoin(WLD)in East Africa. However, the project’s future success hinges on addressing data privacy concerns and adhering to local regulations in Kenya and beyond. Stay tuned for further developments as Worldcoin navigates its path forward.
