Key Takeaways

  • VeChain’s Web3-powered cleanup campaign launched successfully in Osaka with 47 volunteers.
  • Cleanify rewards participants using blockchain-based B3TR tokens to incentivize real-world sustainability.
  • VeChain expands its global environmental efforts, including ocean plastic removal and sustainable shopping incentives.

VeChain, the enterprise-grade blockchain known for its sustainability efforts, has taken a bold step toward environmental change in Japan. In collaboration with Cleanify, a blockchain-powered environmental platform, VeChain launched its first on-ground street cleaning initiative in Osaka’s popular Kitashinchi district. The event saw 47 volunteers clean up waste including cigarette butts, drink cans, and discarded masks, with participants receiving special gifts in appreciation.

Sunny Lu, VeChain’s CEO, praised the “gold standard” nature of the campaign, attributing its success to the people of Japan. “This time I learned why every city in Japan is so much cleaner than most iconic cities in the world,” Lu noted, emphasizing how early environmental education contributes to long-term civic engagement.

Blockchain Incentives Drive Environmental Action

The campaign is powered by Cleanify’s B3TR token, sourced through the VeBetterDAO. Volunteers earn these tokens by completing cleanups and participating in sustainability campaigns. According to VeChain’s Sarah Naaba, the Osaka event was a major success, and more events are planned throughout Japan.

Upcoming cleanup events are scheduled in Niigata, Sapporo, Toyooka, Omuta, Kitami, and Shibuya on June 14–17, followed by a campaign in Uyo, Nigeria, on August 12, 2025. Cleanify also plans to reward recycling and reuse efforts to further engage communities and expand the reach of its mission.

Global Reach and ESG Ambitions

VeChain’s sustainability drive isn’t stopping at land-based cleanups. The project recently partnered with 4ocean, aiming to remove over 300,000 pounds of plastic from oceans—building on 4ocean’s track record of extracting 40 million pounds to date. Additionally, the VeBetter Grants Program 3.0 incentivizes sustainable shopping and real-life eco-actions.

VeChain ambassador Sebastian believes the project is poised to lead global ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives, which are expected to attract up to $50 trillion in funding by 2030.
