Ireland’s Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) is facing a daunting challenge: recovering $378 million worth of Bitcoin seized from convicted drug dealer Clifton Collins. The digital fortune, amassed by Collins during Bitcoin’s early days, remains out of reach due to lost wallet access codes, turning it into one of the most frustrating asset recovery cases in Irish history.
From Cannabis To Cryptocurrency – Collins’ Digital Goldmine
Collins, a former cannabis grower, invested heavily in Bitcoin in 2011 and 2012, back when the cryptocurrency was worth just a fraction of today’s value. In a move to safeguard his wealth, Collins spread his Bitcoin across 12 virtual wallets, writing down the crucial access keys on a piece of paper. This piece of paper was stored in a fishing rod case at a property he rented—a simple hiding place that would later cause significant complications.
After his arrest in 2019, Collins informed authorities that the fishing rod case containing the keys had been lost during a break-in. Without these keys, the Bitcoin—worth about $56 million at the time of the seizure—is now locked out of reach. As Bitcoin’s value surged over the years, the inaccessible digital treasure grew to a staggering $378 million, deepening CAB’s frustration.
Despite extensive efforts, both Collins and CAB have been unable to recover the wallet keys. However, the bureau remains optimistic that future technological breakthroughs may one day unlock the inaccessible funds.
CAB’s Successes and Setbacks
While the majority of Collins’ Bitcoin remains trapped, CAB did manage to seize €1 million worth of accessible Bitcoin, along with other assets, including a Gyro aircraft, camper van, and fishing boat. In total, Collins was forced to forfeit assets valued at €1.2 million.
CAB has otherwise achieved notable successes. In 2023, the bureau returned €8.6 million to the Irish exchequer—its largest recovery in 15 years. However, the $378 million Bitcoin stash continues to be an unsolved challenge and a stark reminder of the complexities in seizing and managing cryptocurrency.

Future Hope for Unlocking the Bitcoin
As cryptocurrencies become more integrated into criminal activity, cases like Collins’ illustrate the difficulties of asset recovery in the digital age. CAB officials remain hopeful that advancements in cryptography or blockchain forensics might unlock the missing Bitcoin wallets in the future. Until then, the fortune remains in limbo, tantalizingly out of reach.
This case highlights both the opportunities and risks of cryptocurrency investments, especially for those navigating the blurred line between legitimate wealth and illicit activity. For CAB, the pursuit of Collins’ Bitcoin fortune is far from over—and every passing day brings new hope that the keys might still be found.
