Hyperliquid Faces 2 Major Challenges as U.S. Expansion Moves Closer

  • Hyperliquid is exploring a regulated path to bring perpetual futures to U.S. users.
  • Wintermute CEO Evgeny Gaevoy sees regulation and blockchain throughput as major risks.
  • U.S. expansion could increase liquidity, but scaling may pressure Hyperliquid’s decentralized model.

Hyperliquid is approaching a potentially important stage in its growth, but Wintermute CEO Evgeny Gaevoy says the decentralized trading platform faces two major challenges: regulation and scalability. His comments come as Hyperliquid explores a regulated route that could eventually make its perpetual futures available to U.S. users.

Regulation Could Test Hyperliquid’s Identity

A key question is whether tighter U.S. rules could force Hyperliquid to adopt compliance measures such as know-your-customer requirements or restrictions on users from sanctioned regions.

Gaevoy warned that if Hyperliquid becomes heavily dependent on KYC, it could start to resemble a conventional centralized exchange. That would raise questions about how much of the platform’s original onchain model could survive increased regulatory oversight.

Hyperliquid is nevertheless pursuing U.S. access. Reports indicate the project is exploring a structure under which regulated American firms could provide its perpetual futures to U.S. customers, while trading and settlement would continue on Hyperliquid’s blockchain.

The Hyper Foundation-backed Policy Center has also been engaging with U.S. policymakers, while its policy efforts are focused on securing a workable interpretation of existing regulations.

Throughput Is Another Major Challenge

Gaevoy also questioned whether blockchain infrastructure can eventually support the trading volumes processed by major traditional exchanges, including CME and Nasdaq.

His argument points to a broader issue facing decentralized finance: increasing capacity may require compromises. If Hyperliquid needs significantly greater processing power to compete with traditional markets, pressure could grow to centralize parts of its infrastructure.

That does not necessarily undermine the platform’s business model, but it could change the balance between performance and decentralization that attracts users to onchain markets.

U.S. Expansion Could Bring New Liquidity

Hyperliquid has already built significant trading activity without access to American users. About 32% of its second-quarter volume was linked to stocks and other real-world assets, suggesting the platform is expanding beyond traditional crypto markets.

A regulated U.S. entry could significantly broaden its addressable market and potentially bring additional capital and liquidity to the ecosystem. However, expansion also creates a difficult balancing act.

HYPE is trading around $57.46, about 25% below its June record high. For Hyperliquid, the next phase may depend less on attracting users and more on proving that it can meet regulatory demands and scale its infrastructure without losing the onchain characteristics that set it apart.

Hyperliquid’s U.S. ambitions could become a major growth catalyst, but regulation and throughput remain important tests. How the platform handles those challenges could determine whether it can evolve into a major financial marketplace while retaining its decentralized foundation.
