Crypto Faces 2 Major Tests: Custodia’s Fed Battle and Ethereum’s $2,000 Breakout

  • The Blockchain Association is supporting Custodia’s Supreme Court fight over Fed master-account access.
  • Ethereum faces a critical $1,900-$2,000 resistance zone, with $3,000 emerging as a bullish target.
  • A successful ETH breakout could strengthen the case for a broader altcoin recovery.

The crypto industry is facing two important tests at once: a legal fight over access to the U.S. banking system and a market battle that could determine whether altcoins finally regain momentum. Custodia Bank’s Supreme Court case has drawn support from major crypto advocates, while Ethereum (ETH) is approaching the critical $1,900-$2,000 price zone.

Blockchain Association Backs Custodia in Fed Case

The Blockchain Association has filed an amicus brief backing Custodia Bank in its Supreme Court petition against the Federal Reserve’s rejection of the bank’s application for a master account.

Custodia, a Wyoming-chartered bank, applied for the account in 2020. A Federal Reserve master account provides direct access to the central bank’s payment infrastructure, allowing eligible financial institutions to settle payments without relying on intermediary banks.

The Kansas City Fed rejected Custodia’s application, pointing to concerns about the bank’s crypto-focused business model and potential financial stability risks. Custodia has argued that legally qualified depository institutions should have access to master accounts under federal law.

Lower courts have so far sided with the Federal Reserve. The Blockchain Association’s intervention signals that crypto industry groups view the case as important beyond Custodia itself, particularly for firms seeking traditional banking access.

Kraken Gets Limited Fed Access

The dispute comes as the Federal Reserve has taken a more cautious approach with crypto companies. Kraken recently received a limited-purpose master account, but the arrangement differs significantly from a traditional full account.

The account does not provide interest on reserves or access to emergency central bank lending. It is also restricted to payment-related activities and operates under a one-year trial period.

The contrast with Custodia highlights the unresolved question of how far crypto firms should be integrated into the traditional financial system. The debate is also unfolding alongside expectations surrounding the CLARITY Act, which could establish clearer rules for the U.S. digital asset sector.

Ethereum Faces a Major $2,000 Decision

At the same time, Ethereum is approaching a key market threshold. A sustained break above $1,900-$2,000 could strengthen the case for a broader trend reversal and potentially put $3,000 in focus.

ETH previously moved above a long-term descending trendline in July, while analysts including Ali Martinez and Michaël van de Poppe have highlighted the possibility of further upside. Martinez has identified $1,580 as important support.

Failure to break $2,000, however, could leave Ethereum trapped in consolidation and expose the market to a move toward $1,700 or potentially $1,500.

Ethereum’s next move could have implications beyond ETH. The Others/BTC market has remained weak and largely sideways for more than a year.

A decisive Ethereum breakout could improve confidence across the altcoin market, while another rejection may prolong the sector’s recovery.

The legal battle over crypto banking access and Ethereum’s technical setup ultimately reflect the same broader issue: the industry is still searching for a clearer path toward mainstream financial integration and sustainable growth.
