- Hedera Hashgraph is placing a bold bet on Africa’s digital future with the launch of the continent’s largest Web3 hackathon.
Hedera Hashgraph, in partnership with the Hashgraph Association and the Exponential Science Foundation, has officially announced the Hedera Africa Hackathon 2025 — a groundbreaking initiative with a prize pool exceeding $1 million. Scheduled to run from August 1 to September 30, this ambitious program aims to empower over 10,000 developers from across Africa and beyond.
This marks a significant move in Hedera’s global strategy to foster decentralized innovation. The initiative combines in-person events across 20+ African cities—including Nairobi, Lagos, Cape Town, Cairo, and Casablanca—with a global virtual track, making it accessible to developers worldwide.

Empowering Through Education
To ensure widespread participation, Hedera has launched the Hedera Academy, a free training and certification platform aimed at preparing 10,000 developers with essential Web3 skills. Supported by over 50 partners, 100 universities, and numerous tech hubs, the Academy is providing a gateway for newcomers and seasoned coders alike to engage with cutting-edge technologies.
Participants will tackle real-world challenges across sectors such as finance, healthcare, sustainability, and agriculture, using tools like AI, IoT, robotics, and quantum computing. Tracks include On-Chain Finance & RWA Tokenization, Self-Sovereign Identity & AI, and Gaming, Metaverse & NFTs.
Africa at the Forefront of Web3 Growth
Kamal Youssefi, President of The Hashgraph Association, emphasized Africa’s unique position: “Africa is home to one of the youngest, most dynamic tech communities globally. By equipping developers with Web3 skills, we’re shaping the future of decentralized innovation.”
Paolo Tasca, Co-Founder of Exponential Science Foundation, echoed this sentiment, stating that the initiative will “encourage the next generation of tech builders and drive blockchain education within a continent that shows incredible growth potential.”
HBAR Market Snapshot
Despite the excitement, Hedera’s native token HBAR has seen a 3.14% dip in 24 hours and a 4% drop over the past week, currently threatening a break below the $0.18 support. This hackathon, however, may provide renewed momentum if it delivers on its promise to ignite developer interest across emerging markets.
