Ethereum Surges 18% as $98M in Shorts Face Liquidation: Can ETH Hit $2,636?

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...
  • Ethereum surged 18%, but the $2,431–$2,500 zone could determine whether the breakout extends toward $2,636.
  • Nearly $98 million in ETH shorts could face increasing pressure if buyers push ETH above nearby liquidation levels.
  • PUMP’s $6 million leveraged long and $739,560 spot outflow strengthen the bullish setup, but $0.003128 remains key resistance.

Ethereum’s sharp breakout and renewed whale activity in Pump.fun’s PUMP token are giving the crypto market a fresh dose of bullish momentum. ETH surged 18% in 24 hours, while PUMP gained more than 8%, although both assets now face important technical levels that could determine whether the rallies continue.

Ethereum Breakout Gains Momentum

Ethereum climbed from a five-week consolidation range to reach $2,252.80 after breaking above the $2,003 resistance level. Trading volume exploded 402%, showing that the move was supported by unusually strong market participation. ETH’s weekly gain also reached 19.65%.

Momentum indicators, however, are flashing signs of an overheated market. The RSI climbed to 92.14, while the MACD accelerated sharply. Such readings do not automatically signal a reversal, but they suggest ETH may need to consolidate before making another major move.

The immediate hurdle sits around $2,431–$2,500, an area where sellers have previously been active. A sustained move above $2,500 could put $2,636 in focus, while losing $2,003 would weaken the breakout.

ETH Faces a $98 Million Short Squeeze Setup

Ethereum’s rally is also putting pressure on leveraged bears. Hourly taker buy volume reached $2.55 billion on August 19, marking one of the strongest readings since February.

At the same time, two Hyperliquid whales reportedly hold short positions totaling 50,838 ETH, valued at about $98 million. One liquidation level is near $2,273, close to ETH’s current advance.

If ETH continues climbing, forced short closures could add another layer of buying pressure. A failure to maintain momentum, however, could allow sellers to absorb the aggressive demand.

PUMP Whale Bet Highlights Key Support

PUMP is showing a similar risk-reward setup. A trader opened a roughly $6 million leveraged long on 1.94 billion PUMP using 10x leverage and had about $246,000 in unrealized gains. The liquidation price was set near $0.002852.

PUMP also recorded approximately $739,560 in spot outflows, reducing immediately available exchange supply. Technically, the token remained inside an ascending channel, with resistance around $0.003128 and stronger support at $0.002656.

The liquidation map showed notable concentrations around $0.00300 and $0.00315, making the $0.0031 region particularly important.

Both assets have strong momentum, but neither has eliminated downside risk. Ethereum needs to overcome the $2,431–$2,500 resistance zone, while PUMP must convincingly clear $0.003128 and hold above $0.00300. Continued volume and demand could extend both rallies, but sharp momentum also increases the risk of volatility and profit-taking.
