Ethereum Layer 2 network Scroll has announced a significant upgrade, dubbed Euclid, poised to drastically reduce transaction fees by up to 90% while simultaneously boosting network throughput and security. Described by the team as the “most substantial protocol transformation” since its mainnet launch, Euclid represents a comprehensive overhaul aimed at redefining user and developer expectations for a ZK Rollup.
This pivotal upgrade arrives at a crucial juncture for Ethereum, which has long prioritized scaling through Layer 2 solutions. Amidst fluctuating market conditions and increasing competition from alternative Layer 1 blockchains, Scroll’s advancements offer a compelling vision for Ethereum’s scalability roadmap. The Euclid upgrade incorporates five key improvements designed to propel Scroll towards “Stage-1 ready” status, a benchmark defined by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and L2BEAT, signifying a significant level of decentralization while upholding Ethereum’s robust security guarantees.
Key Technical Enhancements Driving Scroll’s Evolution
The Euclid upgrade introduces several critical technical enhancements. Notably, Scroll is migrating to a new L2 “prover” and state commitment system. This transition involves deprecating the current “halo2 circuits” in favor of a new OpenVM. The team highlights that OpenVM offers more accessible and cost-effective prover code auditing, alongside support for significantly more complex transactions. A key benefit of this shift is the removal of the circuit capacity checker, which has previously acted as a bottleneck on sequencer throughput, paving the way for a considerably faster network.
Furthermore, Euclid will implement “MPT state commitments,” aligning with the Merkle-Patricia Trie proofs utilized natively by Ethereum. This integration is expected to simplify the development of decentralized applications (dApps) on Scroll and enhance sequencer performance. The upgrade also incorporates support for EIP-7702 and RIP-7212. EIP-7702 promises to bring “account abstraction” to Scroll by enabling Externally Owned Accounts, essentially transforming wallets into smart contracts. RIP-7212, the first Rollup Improvement Proposal, also features account abstraction capabilities and security enhancements like biometric authentication for rollups.
