The Ethereum Foundation announced on September 1 that the Holesky testnet will be officially retired in the coming weeks, marking the end of its planned lifecycle as developers prepare for the upcoming Fusaka network upgrade. Launched in September 2023, Holesky has been a key environment for testing Ethereum’s staking infrastructure and validator operations.

    Holesky’s Role in Ethereum Development

Holesky provided developers a safe space to trial new features without risking the main Ethereum network. Over its two-year run, the testnet facilitated thousands of validator operations and played a critical role in testing protocol upgrades such as Dencun and the recently integrated Pectra upgrade. According to the Ethereum Foundation, Holesky achieved its core objectives, helping developers identify potential issues before large-scale deployment.

Critical Failures and the Rise of Hoodi

During the Pectra tests earlier this year, Holesky experienced significant downtime due to incorrect smart contract addresses for Pectra Request Hash Calculations. These failures delayed network finalization and highlighted the need for a more robust testing environment. In response, the Hoodi testnet was launched in March 2025, offering a more stable framework for developers. Holesky’s shutdown now directs teams to migrate all operations to Hoodi, ensuring smoother protocol testing ahead of Fusaka.

    Preparing for Fusaka: Migration Timeline

With the Fusaka upgrade scheduled for November, validators still using Holesky will have a two-week window to move to one of Ethereum’s remaining testnets, including Sepolia, Ephemery, or Hoodi. After this period, Holesky will no longer be supported by client, testing, or infrastructure teams, officially retiring from Ethereum’s development ecosystem.

The transition underscores Ethereum’s ongoing commitment to robust testing and network stability, paving the way for Fusaka and future upgrades. Developers are encouraged to finalize migrations promptly to avoid disruptions in testing and validator operations.
