Following a recent leadership reshuffle in March, the Ethereum Foundation is strategically pivoting its focus towards enhancing user experience and tackling critical layer-1 scaling challenges. This shift comes as the organization aims to empower Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin to dedicate more time to groundbreaking research and exploration, according to a recent statement by co-executive director Tomasz Stańczak.

Stańczak, who assumed his new role alongside Hsiao-Wei Wang on March 17, shared insights on X about the foundation’s evolving priorities. He emphasized that the change in leadership structure is designed to free up Buterin from day-to-day operational tasks and crisis management, allowing him to concentrate on the visionary aspects of Ethereum’s development. “Each time Vitalik shares insights or communicates a direction, he accelerates major long‑term breakthroughs,” Stańczak noted, highlighting the significant impact of Buterin’s contributions.

Buterin’s Proposals Address Key Network Limitations

Since stepping back from daily operations, Vitalik Buterin has already made significant contributions by publishing proposals targeting Ethereum’s pressing privacy and performance limitations. On April 11, he unveiled a comprehensive privacy roadmap suggesting features to anonymize user transactions, advocating for these features to be enabled by default. Furthermore, on April 20, Buterin proposed modifications to the Ethereum Virtual Machine’s (EVM) contract language, aiming to boost the blockchain’s execution layer efficiency and speed.

Stańczak clarified that while Buterin’s proposals carry considerable weight, they are intended to spark dialogue and drive progress across various research domains. He emphasized that the Ethereum community holds the power to refine or even reject these ideas, fostering a collaborative approach to network development.

Near-Term Upgrades Prioritize Usability and Scalability

The Ethereum Foundation’s immediate focus will center on “near-term” objectives, specifically addressing user experience and scaling hurdles within upcoming protocol upgrades. Stańczak outlined that the foundation will concentrate its research efforts on layer-1 scaling solutions, bolstering support for layer-2 scaling initiatives, and implementing user experience enhancements like interoperability in the Pectra, Fusaka, and Glamsterdam upgrades.

While the emphasis has shifted towards more immediate results, the foundation remains committed to fostering long-term innovation. Stańczak indicated that the insights from their leading researchers are expected to materialize into tangible advancements within the next one to two years through projects focused on next-generation execution and consensus layers. The Ethereum Foundation did not respond to a request for comment by publication.
