- Two Binance employees detained in the UAE have been cleared and released.
- The inquiry involved third-party fund flows through a company client money account.
- The case highlights growing regulatory challenges for global crypto exchanges.
Binance employees detained in the United Arab Emirates have been cleared and released after answering questions about third-party fund movements through a company client money account, according to a spokesperson for the cryptocurrency exchange. The case highlights the regulatory challenges facing global crypto firms as authorities continue to examine how institutional digital-asset funds move across jurisdictions.
The employees’ release follows reports that two Binance staff members were stopped at UAE airports and detained as part of police inquiries into potential financial crimes. Binance said the workers were not the focus of the investigation.
Binance Says Employees Were Not Investigation Targets
A Binance spokesperson told Cointelegraph that the employees provided statements concerning third-party transactions involving a company client money account before being cleared.
The exchange characterized the matter as part of routine inquiries rather than an enforcement action directly targeting its employees. Binance also said it is working with Dubai Police and authorities in other Emirates to develop clearer procedures for handling investigations involving institutional client funds.
The episode reflects a broader challenge for cryptocurrency companies operating in markets where digital assets and institutional custody structures are still relatively new.
UAE Crypto Oversight Faces Emerging Challenges
Binance’s comments point to the difficulty authorities and crypto businesses can face when traditional financial concepts intersect with blockchain-based transactions.
Institutional client money accounts can involve multiple parties and complex fund flows, potentially making it harder for investigators to immediately determine ownership, purpose and responsibility for individual transactions.
For Binance, the UAE remains an important market as the region develops its position as a global hub for digital assets. Greater coordination between exchanges and law enforcement could help reduce uncertainty during future inquiries.
Binance Has Faced Regulatory Scrutiny Before
The UAE incident is not the first time Binance employees have become involved in a high-profile investigation.
In 2024, Nigerian authorities detained Tigran Gambaryan, who was then Binance’s head of financial crime compliance. He spent eight months in detention while facing money laundering allegations.
Nigeria eventually dropped all charges against Gambaryan in October 2024, bringing the prolonged dispute to an end.
The previous case underscored the personal and corporate risks that can emerge when cryptocurrency exchanges operate across multiple legal systems.
The latest detentions appear to have ended without charges against the employees, but the incident could still reinforce the importance of clear communication between crypto platforms and regulators.
For Binance, cooperation with UAE authorities may be particularly significant as institutional cryptocurrency activity expands. For regulators, the case illustrates the need to understand increasingly sophisticated digital-asset structures while maintaining effective financial-crime controls.

The immediate outcome is favorable for the detained employees, but the episode shows that regulatory uncertainty remains an important issue for Binance and the wider crypto industry.
