Kenny Li, the co-founder of Manta Network, recently shared a chilling experience where he narrowly escaped a phishing attempt orchestrated by the notorious Lazarus Group. This cybercriminal syndicate has gained a reputation for using sophisticated social engineering tactics to target individuals in the crypto and tech industries.

Li detailed the harrowing experience in an X post, explaining how the attack began with a seemingly innocuous invitation from a contact on Telegram to join a Zoom call. What appeared to be a routine video conference quickly turned into a dangerous situation when the Zoom interface prompted him for camera access. Although the call seemed normal—complete with visible, legitimate faces on screen—something felt off. Li could hear no audio, despite the team members’ cameras being active. The call then requested that he download a script file to update his Zoom app.

Recognizing the red flags, Li acted swiftly, exiting the call and contacting the Telegram contact, only to discover that the individual had deleted all messages and blocked him. The malicious link had opened Zoom through Google Chrome, which prompted an update warning. This served as the final clue that he was being targeted by the Lazarus Group.

Li noted that he had been warned about the Lazarus Group’s tactics, which often involve tricking victims into downloading malicious files disguised as legitimate software updates. The group’s ability to show a legitimate company employee during the call raised concerns about how they pulled it off—some speculated the use of deepfake technology or screen recordings from past calls.

Despite the growing awareness of their operations, the Lazarus Group continues to be a formidable threat. With high-profile attacks like the Bybit hack and last year’s $235 million WazirX breach, their evolving tactics and use of advanced technology make them a persistent danger in the crypto space.
