Solana Shuts Down Sandwich Attackers: Foundation Prioritizes User Safety

The Solana(SOL) Foundation is taking a firm stance against malicious actors on its network. In a recent move, the foundation removed several validator operators from its delegation program due to their suspected involvement in sandwich attacks.

Protecting Users from Exploitative Practices:

Sandwich attacks are a type of front-running exploit where attackers manipulate transaction order to profit from price fluctuations. By strategically placing transactions before and after a user’s trade, attackers can drive up the price and pocket the difference.

Mert Mumtaz, co-founder of Solana RPC provider Helius, explains that the foundation’s move aims to safeguard retail users from such exploitative practices. This aligns with the foundation’s earlier stance, as explicitly prohibiting sandwich attacks through a Discord announcement on May 7, 2024.

Enforcement and Maintaining Network Integrity

Tim Garcia, Solana Validator Relations Lead, emphasized the foundation’s unwavering resolve against malicious activities. Participating in private mempools to facilitate sandwich attacks or harming users will lead to immediate and permanent removal from the delegation program, along with the loss of any delegated SOL tokens.

This action serves as a deterrent and reinforces the importance of responsible validator conduct. The Solana Foundation Delegation Program empowers validators by delegating SOL tokens, eliminating the need for them to hold massive token reserves themselves. However, participation comes with the expectation of adhering to established guidelines and ethical practices.

Combating MEV and Ensuring Fairness

The broader issue at play here is Maximal Extractable Value (MEV), where validators manipulate transaction order for personal gain. This includes both front-running and sandwich attacks. Such practices inflate costs and slippage for users, disrupting fair market conditions.

The foundation’s enforcement actions against sandwich attacks demonstrate their commitment to tackling MEV and fostering a trustworthy environment for all Solana users. By removing support from malicious validators, they aim to deter future exploitative behavior and uphold the network’s integrity.

This decisive step reinforces the Solana Foundation’s dedication to user protection and ensuring a smooth and fair network operation for everyone involved.
