Flappy Bird’s GameFi Comeback Faces Backlash – 70% Of Fans Question Revival Effort

In a move that has sent ripples through both the gaming and GameFi communities, the iconic 2013 mobile game Flappy Bird is set to make a comeback. The nostalgia-fueled revival, announced recently as part of Telegram’s burgeoning GameFi ecosystem, has been met with widespread skepticism and backlash. This backlash was so intense that it compelled Dong Nguyen, the game’s original creator, to break a seven-year social media silence to disassociate himself from the project.

The controversy surrounding the Flappy Bird revival centers on accusations that the new venture, led by the Flappy Bird Foundation, is merely a case of “GameFi grifting.” Critics argue that this attempt to capitalize on the game’s former glory feels more like a cash grab than a genuine revival.

However, the Flappy Bird Foundation, the group behind the revival, strongly disputes these claims. In an emailed statement, the Foundation emphasized their deep-rooted passion for Flappy Bird, which was pulled from app stores in 2014. “After the game was removed, like many fans, we couldn’t stop thinking about it,” the Foundation said. “This led us to pursue its revival.”

The Foundation’s quest to bring back Flappy Bird was not without its obstacles. Following the game’s takedown, the Flappy Bird trademark was abandoned, only to be picked up by Mobile Media Partners in 2018. Gametech Holdings, LLC acquired the trademark from Mobile Media Partners in 2021. The Foundation acquired the rights from Gametech Holdings in August 2024, positioning themselves as the new stewards of the Flappy Bird intellectual property (IP) and ecosystem.

One key figure in this revival is Kek, the developer behind Piou Piou vs Cactus, a game that shares notable similarities with Flappy Bird. Kek has joined forces with the Foundation, asserting that their collaboration brings a fresh perspective to the beloved franchise. “It’s incredible to work alongside such a dedicated team of fans and creators who are truly passionate about the game,” Kek stated.

Despite the criticisms, the Foundation remains steadfast in its mission. They argue that their efforts are not merely about reaping financial benefits but about honoring the legacy of a game that captured the hearts of millions. By bringing on board key contributors and securing the rights to related projects, the Foundation aims to breathe new life into Flappy Bird and continue its legacy within the evolving GameFi landscape.

As the gaming world watches closely, the success of this revival will likely hinge on how well the Foundation can navigate the criticisms and prove that their intentions go beyond mere exploitation.
