Bitcoin Surges as Asian Stocks Sink: 5 Key Market Signals to Watch

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...
  • Bitcoin climbed toward $75,500 while major Asian stock markets headed for weekly losses.
  • Gold gained 3.1% as rising Treasury yields and US fiscal concerns increased demand for perceived safe-haven assets.
  • Nvidia earnings and Treasury yields could determine whether Bitcoin’s recent strength continues.

Asian stocks are heading toward weekly losses as a renewed rise in US Treasury yields weighs on risk appetite. Yet Bitcoin and gold have moved higher, highlighting a growing divide between traditional equities and assets investors view as potential stores of value.

The shift comes as concerns over US debt, fiscal deficits and higher borrowing costs continue to unsettle markets. With Treasury yields climbing again, investors are reassessing exposure to stocks while seeking protection in gold and, increasingly, Bitcoin.

Asian Markets Feel the Pressure

Japan’s Nikkei fell 0.8% at Friday’s open, extending its weekly decline to 4.4% before recovering some ground. South Korea and Taiwan posted modest gains on the day but remained lower for the week.

The pressure has been closely tied to the US bond market. The 30-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.25%, while the 10-year yield reached 4.71%. Higher yields can make equities less attractive by increasing borrowing costs and raising the return available from government debt.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has discussed potentially expanding government bond repurchases and pursuing fiscal consolidation. However, doubts remain over whether Washington can reduce spending enough to meaningfully address a deficit running above 6% of GDP.

Bitcoin and Gold Take the Spotlight

While stocks struggled, Bitcoin rallied toward $75,500 intraday before trading near $74,300. Gold also strengthened, holding around $4,513 an ounce after gaining 3.1% over the week.

The simultaneous rise in Bitcoin and gold is significant because both are increasingly being discussed as alternatives during periods of currency and fiscal uncertainty. Expectations surrounding Treasury buybacks have reinforced concerns about monetary dilution, supporting the broader safe-haven narrative.

Bitcoin’s performance also comes as the US dollar index falls nearly 0.9% for the week to a three-month low. A weaker dollar can improve the appeal of dollar-priced assets such as Bitcoin and gold.

Wall Street Adds to Market Uncertainty

US equities have not escaped the bond-market pressure. Through Thursday, the S&P 500 had fallen 1.9% for the week, while the Nasdaq was down 2.5%. The Dow dropped 703 points on Thursday, while Walmart plunged 9% following weak US sales.

Next week’s Nvidia earnings could provide an important test for investor confidence in the AI-driven market rally. A stronger-than-expected report could revive risk appetite, but another bout of selling could challenge the recent strength in Bitcoin and other assets.

For now, Bitcoin’s rally alongside gold suggests investors are treating the cryptocurrency as more than a speculative asset. Whether that trend lasts will depend heavily on Treasury yields, the dollar and broader risk sentiment.

If bond-market stress persists, Bitcoin and gold could remain in focus. But a sharp recovery in equities could quickly test whether Bitcoin can maintain its safe-haven momentum.
