Worldcoin Strengthens Security with Independent Orb Software Audit and User-Centric Personal Custody

Worldcoin, a project aiming to establish a universal digital identity system, has taken significant strides towards user data security and transparency. A recent independent audit conducted by Trail of Bits, a leading cybersecurity firm, confirmed the robustness of Worldcoin’s Orb software, particularly in safeguarding sensitive user data like iris codes. This audit arrives at a critical juncture, following inquiries raised by South Korea and Spain regarding Worldcoin’s data management practices.

Focus on User Control with Personal Custody

Worldcoin’s response to these concerns is clear: user empowerment. Their innovative Personal Custody feature allows users to store all data generated during World ID verification – including images and metadata used for iris code creation – directly on their devices. This represents a major shift from previous automatic data erasure policies, granting users complete control over their information.

Personal Custody unlocks additional security benefits. It paves the way for Face Authentication, a local on-device process that verifies user identity without ever transmitting facial data. This strengthens the overall security of the World ID network.

Demystifying Personal Custody for A Secure Data Journey

To understand how Personal Custody secures user information, let’s delve into the process:

Encryption Key Creation: Users’ devices generate unique encryption keys for data protection. The public key is shared with the backend system.

Backend and Orb Coordination: The backend creates additional encryption keys to further safeguard the data at the Orb device.

Image Processing and Encryption: The Orb captures images for World ID verification, encrypts them, and prepares them for secure transfer.

Data Transfer and Deletion: Encrypted data packages are temporarily stored on the backend before being downloaded to the user’s device. Importantly, the Orb deletes all data upon successful download.

Double Encryption for Maximum Security: By utilizing public key encryption and double encryption techniques, Worldcoin ensures user data remains confidential and secure.

A User-Centric Approach to Identity Management

Personal Custody goes beyond just being a security protocol. It reflects Worldcoin’s core philosophy of prioritizing user control. This approach fosters a modular and adaptable system design, paving the way for an open and permissionless identity protocol. With the introduction of Personal Custody, Worldcoin has also discontinued its optional Data Custody service at Orbs, emphasizing informed consent in data sharing.

Worldcoin’s commitment to robust security audits and user-centric data management demonstrates its dedication to building a secure and transparent digital identity ecosystem.
