Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has revealed a forward-looking roadmap aimed at making private transactions the default across the Ethereum ecosystem. Shared on the Ethereum Magicians forum, the plan introduces a series of practical and incremental upgrades to improve user privacy—without altering Ethereum’s core consensus mechanism.

“This roadmap can be combined with a longer-term roadmap… or privacy-preserving application-specific rollups,” Buterin explained, emphasizing flexibility for future enhancements.

The proposed roadmap outlines four key privacy objectives: securing on-chain payments, partially anonymizing in-app activity, preserving the privacy of on-chain reads, and achieving network-level anonymity. Buterin’s approach is rooted in realistic short-term implementations and deeper structural upgrades over time.

A key proposal includes integrating privacy features directly into wallets, such as default “shielded balances” that obscure transaction history. Another significant step is encouraging a “one address per application” standard to prevent cross-application tracking. “It’s a major step… but this is the most practical way to remove public links,” Buterin noted.

Further, he advocates for making “send-to-self” transactions private by default—a necessary move to support address-specific privacy. Buterin also suggested deploying Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) for short-term RPC privacy, while eyeing Private Information Retrieval (PIR) for future use.

In the long run, foundational changes like EIP-7701 (account abstraction) and FOCIL (Fork-Choice enforced Inclusion Lists) are planned. These would eliminate the need for centralized relays in privacy protocols, making Ethereum more censorship-resistant and secure.

Buterin’s proposal has sparked enthusiasm across the crypto community. “Vitalik’s finally giving privacy the attention it deserves,” one analyst commented. However, others raised concerns. “Execution risk is high… adopting zk tech is key,” warned another expert.

The roadmap lands as Ethereum gears up for its Pectra upgrade, which focuses on performance. Together, these initiatives could position Ethereum as the go-to blockchain for privacy-conscious users—an increasingly vital feature in today’s digital landscape.
