Popular Blockchain Platform Polygon’s Discord Channel Hacked, Users Warned of Phishing Attacks

Polygon, a leading blockchain platform, has confirmed its official Discord channel was compromised. This incident highlights the increasing vulnerability of online communities to cyberattacks, particularly those dealing with digital assets.

Mudit Gupta, Polygon’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), issued a statement acknowledging the breach and urging users to exercise extreme caution. “We urge everyone to avoid clicking on any links shared within the Discord channel until the situation is fully resolved,” Gupta emphasized. This warning comes amidst reports of malicious links being posted, potentially leading to phishing scams targeting unsuspecting users.

The security breach has sparked concerns despite Polygon claiming all privileged accounts had two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled. This incident underscores the evolving tactics of cybercriminals and the need for robust security measures beyond basic authentication protocols.

The impact of the hack is already being felt by the Polygon community. Users reported scammers impersonating support agents within the compromised Discord server. One user, shadabk2005, shared their experience on another platform, highlighting the confusion created by fake announcements and the silencing of warnings: “There are scam links being posted in the announcements channel… I was given a timeout for trying to highlight the issue.”

The situation escalated further when another user, ValidatorK, reported a significant financial loss. They claim to have lost $150,000 worth of Ether (ETH) from their pool after interacting with what appeared to be a legitimate announcement on the compromised Discord channel.

This attack follows a string of similar incidents targeting Discord servers in the crypto space. Notably, CertiK, a blockchain security firm, reported a phishing scam on the Arbitrum Discord server in March 2023, while Gnus.AI, an artificial intelligence network, lost approximately $1.27 million due to a Discord-related exploit in May 2024.

The timing of the hack further complicates matters for Polygon. The platform is currently in the midst of a major network upgrade scheduled for September 4th, which includes replacing its native MATIC token with POL tokens. This upgrade aims to enhance the utility of Polygon’s token and strengthen its growing network of aggregated blockchains (AggLayer).

As investigations into the Discord breach continue, Polygon is advised to prioritize regaining control of the server and implementing stricter security protocols. The incident serves as a stark reminder for all crypto communities to remain vigilant against phishing attempts and prioritize verifying information before clicking on links or engaging with supposed support personnel.
