HBO’s latest documentary, Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, has named Canadian Bitcoin core developer Peter Todd as the potential creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. However, the confession isn’t as straightforward as it might seem.
Producer Cullen Hoback confronted Todd and Blockstream founder Adam Back with evidence suggesting that Todd was, in fact, Nakamoto. The documentary culminates in a dramatic scene where Todd responds to Hoback’s accusation with the words, “Well yeah, I’m Satoshi Nakamoto.”
While this admission might seem conclusive, it’s important to note that Todd has a history of using the phrase “I am Satoshi” playfully to support the real creator’s right to privacy. He has publicly denied being Nakamoto both before and after the documentary’s release.
Todd’s Denial and Previous Claims
Todd has repeatedly dismissed Hoback’s conclusion, emphasizing that he is not the elusive figure behind Bitcoin. In a recent response on X, he wrote, “I am not Satoshi,” reiterating his previous stance.
Furthermore, Todd has shared humorous anecdotes about claiming to be Satoshi in the past. In a 2019 episode of the What Bitcoin Did podcast, he joked, “I am Satoshi, as is everyone else.” He also revealed that he purchased his first Bitcoin in October 2010, around two years after the publication of Bitcoin’s whitepaper.
Hoback’s Reasoning and Todd’s Explanation
Hoback’s theory rests on a chat log message where Todd claimed to be “the world’s leading expert on how to sacrifice your Bitcoins,” suggesting that he had permanently removed his own access to the 1.1 million Bitcoin believed to be held by Nakamoto.
Todd, however, has offered his own explanation for why the creator of Bitcoin might choose to remain anonymous. He suggested that using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto could help people take Bitcoin seriously, establishing it as a creation of a real cryptographer rather than a young student.

The Mystery Continues
While HBO’s documentary presents compelling evidence, it ultimately leaves the question of Satoshi Nakamoto’s true identity unanswered. Peter Todd’s playful admissions and denials add to the complexity of the mystery. As the search for the elusive creator of Bitcoin continues, it remains to be seen if any new revelations will emerge to shed light on this enigmatic figure.
