Get ready to frag some demons… on the blockchain! Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, has hinted at the possible launch date for a playable version of Doom running on Cardano’s Hydra scaling solution. This news comes just ahead of the Rare Evo blockchain conference in Las Vegas (August 15-17), where Hoskinson is a featured speaker.
Hoskinson recently shared a link to a Doom experience seemingly built on the Hydra.family platform. While not playable yet (“Coming Soon”), this suggests an imminent launch, further fueled by a suggestive GIF shared by Trym Måke Bruset, a product manager at IOHK (Cardano’s development arm).
This news follows Hoskinson’s initial announcement in May 2024, where he revealed plans to bring Doom to Hydra. He showcased a brief 37-second clip of Doom gameplay with the caption “Coming to Hydra.” Here, Doom would function as smart contracts running on individual Hydra heads.
For the uninitiated, Doom is a legendary first-person shooter (FPS) released in 1993. Renowned for its groundbreaking 3D graphics and fast-paced action, Doom was a major influence on the FPS genre and multiplayer deathmatches. Its success spawned numerous sequels, spin-offs, and a passionate modding community.
According to IOHK, attendees at the Rare Evo conference will have the chance to play a version of Hydra Doom, both online and offline. This is a significant step for blockchain gaming, potentially demonstrating the viability of running complex games on decentralized networks.

Hoskinson, a known gamer himself, has previously expressed his interest in integrating traditional games with blockchain technology. In 2020, he even considered acquiring Legends of Valour, a classic RPG, with the intention of revitalizing it.
Whether Doom on Hydra becomes a full-fledged revival or a technical showcase remains to be seen. However, it signifies a growing trend of innovation at the intersection of gaming and blockchain technology. With the Rare Evo conference just around the corner, gamers and blockchain enthusiasts alike will be watching closely to see if Doom truly finds a new life on Cardano’s Hydra.
