Decentraland’s X Account Hacked – 1000s At Risk From Fake MANA Airdrop, Warns PeckShield

On September 19, blockchain security firm PeckShield alerted users via X (formerly Twitter) that the official X account of virtual reality platform Decentraland had been hacked. According to PeckShield, hackers are distributing a phishing link disguised as a MANA token airdrop, targeting Decentraland’s followers.

Phishing Attack Targets Decentraland Users

The attackers are using the compromised account to spread a fake MANA airdrop link. Users who click the link are directed to a malicious website, where they are asked to connect their crypto wallets in order to claim the airdrop. Instead of receiving tokens, victims have their funds stolen once they link their wallets.

PeckShield quickly stepped in to warn users about the phishing scheme. The firm strongly advised Decentraland followers to avoid clicking the link or engaging with any related content. Until Decentraland confirms that its account has been secured, users should stay cautious and wait for further announcements from the platform.

A Growing Trend of Social Media Hacks

This breach comes on the heels of another incident on September 18, when multiple high-profile social media accounts were hacked by crypto scammers. These types of attacks have been rising, with scammers increasingly targeting social media platforms to execute phishing campaigns aimed at crypto enthusiasts.

The takeover of Decentraland’s account began at 01:50 am UTC on September 19. The hackers posted an announcement promoting a MANA airdrop allocation for Decentraland’s community and pinned the post to make it seem more credible. In a calculated move, the bad actor turned off comments on the scam posts, claiming it was to prevent “malicious links” — a tactic to add legitimacy to their fraudulent operation.

Prior to the hack, Decentraland’s last legitimate post on X had been around 10:00 pm UTC on September 18, showcasing the platform’s community fashion choices.

Staying Safe from Crypto Scams

Phishing scams like the one targeting Decentraland have become increasingly sophisticated, but experts like YouTuber Kitboga, known for his work in wasting scammers’ time, offer valuable advice. In a recent interview with Cointelegraph, Kitboga noted that one of the common tactics scammers use is creating a sense of urgency. He advised that remaining calm and carefully considering the situation can prevent individuals from falling into traps.

For Decentraland users and the broader crypto community, the best course of action is to avoid interacting with any suspicious posts and remain patient while waiting for official updates. This incident underscores the importance of vigilance in a world where digital assets and social media accounts are prime targets for cybercriminals.

As phishing attacks continue to plague the crypto space, the recent hack of Decentraland’s X account serves as a reminder for users to stay alert. Blockchain security firm PeckShield’s swift action in warning users likely prevented further losses, but the incident highlights the ever-present risks in the digital landscape. Followers of Decentraland are urged to monitor updates and refrain from engaging with any airdrop-related content until the account’s security is fully restored.
